As the storefront of the Great Canadian Roadshow, we have earned ourselves a reputation built on trust and integrity, and everyone knows that we’re the ones to go to when you want your stuff evaluated. Whether on the road or here in Toronto, we’ve handled a range of fascinating pieces that have their own unique story to tell. War memorabilia, old paper money and coins, vintage toys and comics – you name it, we’ve seen them all.
Curious about the sorts of things we buy? Visit our FAQ where we go into detail about what kind of items we would be happy to take off your hands, including jewellery. We are one the best places to go to sell gold jewellery because we offer prices for gold and silver based off the market value versus the insured value (which is less).
What you won’t see on that page are all the other collectables and memorabilia that we will pay you money for, or connect you with a collector who will. Sometimes it can be an item related to a popular interest like old Star Warstoys and collectables, but other times it could be a niche interest like vintage Halloween decorations.
In fact, there are a number of people who are willing to spend thousands of dollars on vintage Halloween collectables. This may come as a surprise to some people, but if you think about it, there are a number of passionate collectors out there who are willing to spend thousands for all sorts of things. For example, an original Easy-Bake Oven has been known to sell for up to $4,000. Yikes!
Part of the reason why the original Easy-Bake Oven and other toys like the original Furby, old Hot Wheels cars, and Garbage Pail Kids, are so highly valued is because of nostalgia. When a collector holds one of these items in their hands it’s not just a possession: it’s a memento of another time that probably has some special meaning to them.
The same can be said about vintage Halloween collectors: many of them cherish their collection because of the feelings each individual piece provokes. Whether nostalgia for days past or simply because they love all things spooky and creepy, Halloween is one of those celebrations that is a favourite among many people.
Halloween wasn’t always what it is now. Today, this celebration is aimed heavily towards children and like any other holiday it’s been over-commercialized with mass produced, cheap decorations, and an over-emphasis on candy. Decorations can range from overly gory and realistic to just plain cheesy, like fake eyeballs to the typical white ghost with a smiley face.
Back in the 20s and 30s, though, Halloween was a bit of a different story. Parties were thrown by adults for other adults, and the decorations were more geared towards being unsettling and oftentimes demonic. These vintage pieces often host distorted faces with insidious smiles or bodies that are stretched and contorted. Take the photo of a vintage card below, for example, and notice the moon’s crazy, distorted smile – it’s just downright creepy.
Even to this day, the unsettling nature of these pieces can still be felt, which is probably why people find them so attractive. It helps that they are also rare, meaning that there’s quite a bit of competition between collectors which invariably raises these items’ value.
Pretty much all off the decorations that collectors go after are the ones made by three primary sources: Beistle and Dennison, two American companies, and Germany where various artisans made decorations to be imported between the First and Second World War.
Here are some examples of Halloween items that sold on eBay for a lot of money:
